Jacob Gottfried Goeglein

1827 - 1895

Jacob Goeglein

Last night, at his home in St. Joseph township, occurred the death of Jacob Goeglein, one of the best known farmers in Allen county.  He was 68 years of age and had been in failing health for some time.  Jacob Goeglein was born in Germany, January 25, 1827.  He was the son of Daniel and Magdalena Goeglein, who came from Bavaria to this country in 1838.  The Goeglein family, descendants of this couple, have long been prominent in the history of Allen county.  When Jacob came to this country with his parents he helped in their labors in clearing an eighty-acre farm in Ohio.  He received a common school education and was an intelligent and progressive citizen.  He was elected and served two terms as county commissioner with credit to himself.  Though beginning life with no advantages, at the time of his death he was one of the wealthy farmers of the county and owns a 220 acre farm, with commodious buildings.  Politically Mr. Goeglein was a Democrat.  While still in Ohio Mr. Goeglein was married to Otillia Mess, and they had thirteen children, of whom eleven survive him.  they are John, Jacob, Mary, Henry, Abraham, Sophia, Elizabeth, William, Christian, Valentine and Daniel.  The deceased was a member of the German Lutheran church.  John and George Goeglein, of St. Joseph township, are brothers of the deceased.
